After the last FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting, held yesterday (December 16), a provisional ‘calendar’ with still quiet a bit of question marks was announced for the 2021 FIA World Rallycross Championship.
For the 2021 series 10 calendar slots are foreseen with 8 eight events already named and two still to be announced, one in Europe and one in the Middle East (Asia). The championship is set to run from May until November with the championship opener taking place in Belgium (Francorchamps) and the season finale in South Africa (Cape Town).
Höljes in Sweden and Lohéac in France both return for 2021 to their traditional calendar slots, respectively the first weekend of July and the first weekend of September. Furthermore, last year events took place in or were initially foreseen for Portugal, Latvia and the United Arab Emirates, however none of these countries do have – at least for now – an actual spot on the 2021 calendar.
In addition to the 10-round world championship, the FIA European Rallycross Championship will be run in 2021 over five events (Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Spain and France) while the new FIA RX2e Championship will be run over six events (Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Spain, Germany and France). The FIA European RX3 Championship will see events in Belgium, Norway, Sweden, France and a yet to be named European country.
In light of a new promoter for the series, after IMG announced back in October its intention to step down from its promoter role (see this article), it is the aim to finalize a decision in the beginning of 2021.
