An amended calendar for the 2021 FIA World Rallycross Championship has been announced today (March 26) by WRC Promoter, the new promoter for World RX after IMG stepped down from its promoter role (see this article).
With the global health crisis still around and recently a surge of cases in several countries and plenty of travel restrictions in place the in December 2020 released calendar (see this article) has been brought back from the initial ten race weekends to now seven race weekends in Europe only.
A statement of WRC Promoter reads: “The continued challenges of the pandemic required pragmatic and strategic decisions regarding the calendar structure. It has been condensed and territorially contained to comply with health protocols and travel restrictions.”
The 2021 championship will now go underway mid-June and is scheduled to run until mid-October with events taking place in Norway, Sweden, Spain, Germany, France, Latvia and Belgium.
“The calendar has been revised with the support of the World RX teams to ensure a fitting finale for the Supercars ahead of the start of the electric era in 2022. We want maximum participation, whilst retaining a mouth-watering array of the best circuits,” said Jona Siebel, Managing Director of WRC Promoter.
“We’ve made a strategic decision to start midway through the year to give organisers every possible opportunity to open their doors to fans in these challenging COVID-19 times.”
The World championship with RX1 cars will be run over eight rounds with Germany’s Nürburgring set to be a double header event and the round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will be run for the first time according to a Friday and Saturday evening format. The new all electric RX2e championship will be run over six events while the European championship for respectively RX1 cars and RX3 cars will be run over four and five events.
